I for one have enjoyed the discussion of the cost of keeping the M in MSAR.
It's interesting to see how some costs vary across the country and others are
surprisingly across the board.
BUT, if a change of topic is needed... How do you educate the agencies that
utilize your team that the horses are a valuable tool? when we are called out
it is always for ground and k9.

Yep, until I got involved with MSAR I was happy and oblivious to EXACTLY how
much money I spent on my horse. Sigh. Lauri

Management does tend to get into a rut regarding when they think it is
appropriate to call MSAR. Increased communication and demonstration tends to
enlighten management regarding the versatility of MSAR.
If a team is serious about expanding into new kinds of participation,
advance collaboration with management helps. Sit down together and identify
where / how you think MSAR would be useful and ask management to prioritize
any additional training or preparedness needed. Then document training
indicating those objectives (share documentation with management) and even
invite management to attend training.
It also helps to be more "visible" to management. Communicate regularly so
MSAR is in the front of the mind instead of an afterthought.
And as an after incident debriefing, if you see where MSAR could have been
used / used more effectively, open discussion on the subject. (There may
have been a reason that you aren't aware of why MSAR had a different
assignment / no assignment.)
