I've identified a good way to mark long term crops such as fruit trees:
Mark a 1/2" PVC pipe stake with Sharpie and then slide a shorter capped
piece of 3/4" PVC over the top. To read the label, you have to lift the
cover but it will be there for many years.

I do find that Sharpie on plastic lasts about a year exposed to sun and
weather.
