Good points... Our situation is little more complex than simply suggesting that everyone is an employee. All are most certainly covered by our liability insurance. We also board a great number of horses and have lots of *cough* horsetrading going on in terms of stall cleaning for boarding discounts or free horse use for care and the like. The point is that we give good fair trades. You stop working you have to buy your food from us. If you have a death in the family and or an off farm injury you'll still get some food dropped off to you. I think that a community is obligated to teach those that want to learn. If you want to make it part of the "trade" that is fine, I do not. We get a couple thousand dollars a year from the Federal government for the simple fact that we grow some of acres in corn and beans each year. I think its silly and that tax payers are slow for electing officials that give us this money but I have no problems accepting it. I think of this as my payment for teaching those VERY few that actually want to learn. I have folks coming to me wanting to weed just to help because its cheaper than buying a gym membership and it "helps a local farmer"...I'd prefer this form of TRUE Community Supported Agriculture over taking money form folks before I have something to sell them. That's me though and in no way a condemnation of the more typical CSA. Regardless of how the government defines an employee I define one as an individual hired with the specific purpose of being paid a fair cash wage for a specific task done and who receives a W2. The rest all fit into the gray zone of what works for us works for us so long as everyone is happy.
