Richard, The second Planet Jr. you are describing was commonly used for onions in my area. It should havfe a U-shaped knife attached to the frame/wheel and immediately behind the wheel in addition to the cultivator tines. It works well very well in sandy soils, but if you have rocks, you have to watch out that rocks don't get bound up between the wheel and the knife which is immediately behind the knife. The way they work best is to push them down the row with the knife slightly below the surface of the soil. The knife should kill most of the weeds in the white thread stage and the cultivator tines at the rear will uproot larger weeds and leave a well aerated bed as you cultivate. I spent the last half of that day stripping paint off the one and pounding a bent strut straight on the anvil. Its sort of an interesting design with three tool types a frame that hangs under the traditional wheel hoe handle and wheel set-up. It has a five tine cultivator, a furrow, and a stirrup style hoe. I painted it Sunday its original yellow, green, and red colors and will put it together after I get a second coat on (and take some pictures). |
