Oh? Do you mean like the circus that happened when a cow
had BSE? The meat entered the human food chain before
anything was caught.

The beef industry had a lot to protect. They did not act to
protect it. The USA no longer exports beef to Japan, for
example. When one small processor *wanted* to test all his
beef, the USDA *did not allow* him to do so.

Another example: the Brits covering up BSE for years.

You might also think that Agribusiness would encourage crop
diversity and variation, as a protection against a blight or
fungus or something similar devastating all of a particular
crop. Do they encourage diversity and variation? When pigs
fly, they do.

I see no reason to trust big business to do the right thing.
Not even the right thing for themselves, and certainly not
the right thing for the citizenry.

As to the government's 'protection' of us: look at the
recent Vioxx issue. Merck pulled it after causing .. (how
many? I think the number I've seen is 58,000) - heart
attacks and strokes. Does the FDA protect citizens or
kowtow to big pharmaceutical firms? Certainly it always has
the interests of the citizens at heart... and a herd of pigs
just flew past my window!
