William, I too plan to do some farming for no money. I will be retiring at
the end of this year from a career not on the farm. I have farmed small
acreages (rice, soybeans) for a few years. Enough years to know I don't want
to bring my sweat to a mill where one is told "we will give you this amount
for your work".
About 4 years ago I began growing cucumbers and supply a few bigger
independents within a 15 mile radius of my farm. I make more money on an acre
of cucumbers than 40 acres of soybeans! And it is much more fun. And I
haven't tapped a nearby city of 100,000 because I would have to hire help.
Upon retirement I plan to grow a variety of vegetables/fruits to donate to
a local commodity distribution center. These people really appreciate what is
given. This with the cucumber business($7500/two thirds acre) should be very
rewarding.
