for meat goats go with Kiko. They were selected for parasite resistance and general hardiness as well as fast growing kids on forage only. There is a kiko goat list on yahoo.

Though these do require shearing if it were me in your area I would go with the gulf coast sheep. They were left alone on the gulf coast and have self selected for hardiness, parasite resistance etc.

Could anyone recommend a hardy breed that does not require sheering that
would do well in TN. and if so - where could I obtain a few?

Same question would apply to recommended goat breeds for meat and hardiness.
We were not impressed with the Boer goats.
