Wow - I get no respect. www.brucedeboer.com

However - I agree 150% with you Shea.

I've used/owned:

Canon FTb
Canon A-1, F-1, F-1n
Nikon F, f2, f3, f4, Nikkormat ftn
4x5, 8x10 Sinar F, F2, p, p2, c
Hasselblad C, CM, 503, ELM, ELX

I was one of the original beta testers for Kodak's digital 35mm cameras
back in the late 80's. Shall I go on?

As the only other individual on here with as much or more experience in
photography as David, I'm going to weigh in here and tell you the true
facts.

At a given price point both system are about equal. At any given time
one
system will exceed the other slightly, but the balance will tip next
time
the other company releases their camera. And, either system is far more
capable than you will be as the user. (I wish I could find the link,
but a
group of professional photographers used disposable point and shoots for
an
art project, and their work was amazing).

In general in digital Canon is recognized as being the leader and on the
cutting edge. And Nikon is recognized as being a bit behind in terms of
pixels, resolution and sharpness, but more reliable as far as their
software
goes.

So I recommend you find models from both companies that have the
features
you want and then see which one feels the best to you, fits your hand
best,
and that you like more. And buy that one. Afterall, it's just like the
silly mac versus pc debate. The only correct answer to either is the
one
that makes you happy.

Former owner of:

Canon AE-1
Canon T-90
Canon F-1
Nikon FM2
Nikon F3
Nikon F3 Titanium
Nikon F3P (one of 5000 ever made)
Nikon F4
Canon XL-1 video camera

And current owner of a Canon D20

And I've also owned or used every almost every piece of glass you can
imagine from a 15mm to a 400mm f/2.8
