As the only other individual on here with as much or more experience in
photography as David, I'm going to weigh in here and tell you the true
facts.

At a given price point both system are about equal. At any given time one
system will exceed the other slightly, but the balance will tip next time
the other company releases their camera. And, either system is far more
capable than you will be as the user. (I wish I could find the link, but a
group of professional photographers used disposable point and shoots for an
art project, and their work was amazing).

In general in digital Canon is recognized as being the leader and on the
cutting edge. And Nikon is recognized as being a bit behind in terms of
pixels, resolution and sharpness, but more reliable as far as their software
goes.

So I recommend you find models from both companies that have the features
you want and then see which one feels the best to you, fits your hand best,
and that you like more. And buy that one. Afterall, it's just like the
silly mac versus pc debate. The only correct answer to either is the one
that makes you happy.
