I dunno about insects but worms sure are. In the spring when you can get baitworms cheaply, get a little styro tub and dump them on your compost pile. They'll always stay relatively near the surface, even on a huge pile, because the inner core temperatures are so hot. The worms do a great job of breaking down the outer layers and keeping it aerated.
I also added a large bag (something like 30lb) of cow manure to help my
compost pile get started. The bag cost about $3 at the garden supply store.
There are enough horse farms around here that you can get raw manure and straw free for the hauling, no problem.
Other things to remember is are to keep the pile moist, and to turn the pile
to mix up the stuff.
But don't turn it too often!
