Bev, Those prices sound about the same as here in TN. My daughter just got her first pair of bifocals and needed the same as you or else the lenses are coke bottles and weigh a ton, besides looking bad. Her glasses have always been expensive, even as a child. Eyes are precious things, scrimp somewhere else.

All I can say is Thank God for High Refractive Index Plastic.
It is more than just cosmetic. With glass, there was always a safety
issue, and with either glass or plastic, the weight of the lens
determined(s) what kind of frame it goes it. I still wear the half rim
frames that are popular now;there is not enough support for the lens.
In the old days, before high index lens, and with special frames, I had
zero peripheral vision. That reason alone put me in contacts for 30
years. Alas, those days are over and I am back to glasses. It is
easier, but not cheaper. No worries on scrimping, I have paid about
$600/year for a while now. I am looking at all kinds of alternatives<g>.
