If the SHTF, then you do dry canning. You put your flour, etc. in glass jars
and you bake it for two hours at 200 degrees. The sustained heat kills the
bugs.

And that would be why I have a life time supply of old big pickle jars

She is a chemist at a mine up in Silver City, NM. And she said she is
chemically sensitive, but I wondered if it was work avoidance, since she is a
chemist actively working at a mine......

THANKS............. now... more.

What is a gamma seal lid?

What do bay leaves to as far as weevils?

Are you saying you can store storing flour, as in white, wheat or rye flours
using dry ice also?

Where do I get dry ice?

And, how is dry ice sustainable if TSHTF???
I don't suppose there is a way one can make dry ice at hom

It is carbon dioxide, which is heavier than air. It simply displaces
the air in the bucket, pushing it out. Less air, less spoilage. Less
air, living, air breathing critters (even eggs) suffocate. In a bucket
of say rice, there are air spaces between the kernels of rice. The dry
ice pushes out all that air and displaces it with carbon dioxide, so it
works throughout the bucket, not just in the airspace on the top.
I've found that the gamma seal lids were worth the price(I paid about $5
each for them) to keep food fresh. I store my flour in 5 gallon
buckets, and the gamma seal (plus some bay leaves) keeps out weevils and
bugs.

Interesting idea.

Apples produce ethylene gas, which ripens fruit and makes potatoes and
other crops 'sprout' eyes. Yes.

Perhaps the woman is chemically sensitive, but perhaps she uses that to
avoid work? I'm glad you found a kindred spirit, Leslie. You can learn
a lot from someone like that.

No, depends on the station. Our station has two pumps. One is for off-road
and one is for on-road. You don't have to have it delivered. Now,
locally,
we don't have off-road gas but where we used to live, we also had off-road
gas tanks for the farmer that didn't have diesel run equipment. It was a
card-lock station and those farmers had special forms they filled out and
got a special card for the off-road gas pump.

A friend of mine in N. FL, a former trucker many many years ago, called me
last month. Said that he had received 2 phone calls from 2 different people
trying to give him trucks, just take over payments..... They will be real
cheap in a few years..... for those foolish enough to buy. But then oil
supply destruction comes into play.

Yes, rail should be used more. I don't know if Buffet is super smart or
not.... but a couple years ago he did start buying up a few railroads. Maybe
he is anticipating decreased rail use down the road.

Ah, true on diesel delivered to farms, no road tax on that one. My error.
Only tax on farm vehicles filled up at the local gas stations.

I would definitely have concerns about all kinds of increasing taxes under a
hyperinflation scenario. I would not trust the government to keep things as
they have been when government becomes desperate.

Ah, Leslie, farmers don't pay tax on diesel for tractors. Increasing taxes
won't hurt them in the least.

And that would be my point about the trucking industry which is a major
waste
of fuel. If you look around the countryside you'll see old off-loading
platforms all over the place on the rail lines. They are all now defunct
because of the gas hungry trucking industry. The day of the trucker is fast
approaching a realistic demise. Trucks should be used for short haul only!

Leslie, one of my first summers here, I took a couple of eggs and cracked
them on the street in front of my residence, to see if I could 'fry an egg'
on the pavement. The answer is 'yes'.............................
