My guess is that it was 'overloved' with grain. Of course, now, she has healed and hasn't had any grain for about 3 years. The farrier comes out quite often, but I believe it is mostly preventative maintenance now. This horse is beautiful and well conditioned, with no grain. I doubt that she had metabolic laminitis... I do believe that she may have been pregnant during this time, because I recall A saying that they almost lost her because she could not take the weight.

Now, James, you should know better. The horses have stupid people issues. In nature, they wouldn't have metabolic laminitis issues (and all laminitis is NOT metabolic). In nature, no one would lock them up on dry feed and then turn them out to gorge themselves on "hot" green grass. In nature, no one would work the beejeebers out of them and then give them all the cold water they can drink at one sitting. In nature, no one would be graining them until they looked like lard hogs.
Again, you have to look to the reason for the laminitis AND how severe it is.

I had overlooked Rob's second question, appologies!...I had the samethought as Rob about breeding her, but I'm told that would kill her as
her hooves wouldn't hold up. do you agree with that assessment?
15 years is getting toward the upper limits of foal bearing years. Horses
can and do go beyond that. But the most important question is - has she had
foals before and was it on a regular basis? If she has not foaled by 15 she
will not know how to be a mother. She will be less likely to concieve, and if
she does, she many not lactate at all. You can get around much of that with
drugs, but do you want to go that (expensive) route?
So, if she's an experineced brood mare, very good odds.
If she is not, not good odds.
Bev, if the horse has foundered, it has serious metabolic issues. You don't
breed anything with metabolic issues, even people, unless you are willing to
put up with mucho trouble. I wouldn't attempt it.
James
