sorry, i didn't mean to hit send on the last one.

the swimming hole isn't huge, and the water is entirely too cold for my
comfort so I don't swim at all. in the summer, if i get hot and sweaty, just
wading ankle deep is enough to cool me off.

i think what happened with my husband is that he had this idealized version
of homesteading in his mind. he didn't realize how much effort it is to live
in the country. it is definitely not convenient for many things. he doesn't
like the sacrifices necessary to make a life here. simple pleasures do not
satisfy him, and without that ability, life is too hard. to me, the work of
growing gardens, building and mending fences, feeding animals, finding lost
animals, grading the driveway, etc. is all good work and satisfying when you
can see results. to him it is only major PITA's and not at all enjoyable.

as for the garden, i've been bringing home cardboard to mulch with and i've
used spoiled hay in the past when i have it. the locals burn their old hay,
they don't give it away or sell it. i use the manure my own animals produce
and will make more compost as i get time and when i get a tractor it will be
easier to cut green stuff to go on the pile. also, i clean out my chicken
house once/yr and add that to the pile. most of the locals buy almost all of
their food from the store. only one old guy grows his own and that's the one
i trade with mostly for tomatoes and mustard greens and sweet potatoes. i
trade some with the grumpy old man who owns the river frontage, too, mainly
okra and squash if mine don't make good.
