lol. you didn't ask about the soil here. it is very full of rocks! and poor
until i enrich it with manure and amendments.

the kids and dogs swim in the creek or they go to the end of the driveway
where our little creek empties into a bigger creek and swim there. and the
youngest fishes there, too, but only small fish so far... the king's river
isn't far away, just down the road, but the grumpy old man who owns access to
the river is too much trouble to make it worth trying to fish there.

ours is a square quarter section, but no modern survey. it's on the plot
maps, not sure what they're called, but everyone's acreage is labeled on it.
over the years the neighbors have moved in fences, so it's likely a little
less than 160 acres now. i can see where the old fences used to be, but
unless they move again, i'm not concerned with it.

walk the boundaries? i still have not done it. been to a couple corners, but
not walked from corner to corner, and in some areas you just can't walk a
straight line because of bluffs and boulders. usually i just go out to my
ginseng patches, which takes me over one half of it. one day i plan to spend
the entire day checking out the areas i haven't see yet, but it might not be
until i'm able to quit my day job. when i get a tractor, i'll be spending
more time across the creek picking up rocks and cutting down cedar trees and
getting the field in better shape for grazing. there are old stone walls over
there from years ago when someone else spent days doing just that. i want to
restore the fields and clear the walls again so i can see them better.

it must not be perfect to just anyone, though. my husband is still miserable,
lol. it's just so far out and i think normal people just don't like living
that far away from society. he's leaving the day after Christmas to move back
down south where he thinks life is better. i think it's perfect, though.

and there are definitely an abundant supply of ticks and snakes here. i think
i am finally gaining a resistance to ticks, though, or last season just
wasn't as bad as previous years. the first year we were here i think tick
scouts sent out the word to their cousins and brothers that new blood was in
town.

another drawback is that sometimes you just can't get out, like monday when
the roads were icy and Snodgrass hill was impassable except to large 4-wheel
drive trucks. and when it rains a lot and the creeks rise, sometimes for a
couple days i can't get out. we just keep enough supplies on hand to stay
home.
