Onions are put in the ground 1st week of November here. The huge onion
fields around here are looking mighty pretty. Mine are coming up a bit
slower, but coming up non-the-less, both indoors and out. I've read that in
this area of NM if too cold the tops can brown, but they come right back in
the spring... we'll see.... I have some outside, some started inside in pots
and have reserved much of the seed to plant early spring. We rarely get
snow, and from what I've seen my few visits here, it seems to evaporate...
LOL.
This is not only my first year here, but '09 will be my first attempt ever at
getting a decent sized garden planted, so much I do not know yet.
I stopped by the organic neighbors' today. They are elderly, and were both
ill with the flu today. I saw that the man is working on erecting a small
shade house that looks like he could use some help with, so maybe some
neighborly volunteering seems to be in order in exchange for some local
gardening tips. He's still got quite a bit of stuff growing, still can't
quite see exactly what.

>What would you consider a "mild" winter?
I guess a mild winter has a few frosts, but no period when the ground
freezes. Many many greens would survive that. If you have enough sunlight,
you could overwinter almost anything with a little protection. Do you grow
onions through the winter in the desert? Here garlic is started in the fall,
but onions can't be put out until spring....if they are out in the winter,
they freeze then rot in the spring.

I stake mine to keep them off the ground. It's wet here, and any fruit that
lays on the ground is likely to rot. I guess that's not a problem in the
desert.

Maybe someone will enjoy, I thought it was half way interesting ; In this 3
page story, she 'inteprets' an 18th century farm woman at "one-room,
wood-beamed farmhouse at the Claude Moore Colonial Farm,"

A Colonial Dame
My brief, inspiring career as a historical re-enactor.
By Emily Yoffe

Colonial Emily "Chastity Crump" YoffeVerily, your humble fervent did in the
guise of the Humanae Cavia Porcellus fojourn to the paft, to the year of our
Lord 1771. Prithee, allow me to declaim of my adventure in the colony of
Virginia, and my difcoveries.
The reigning fantasy in many girlhoods is that of becoming a princess,
presiding over a palace, dressing in satin, wielding a scepter. I always
imagined myself as a settler, sitting by a cozy fireside, dressing in
homespun, wielding knitting needles. So the tiny one-room, wood-beamed
farmhouse at the Claude Moore Colonial Farm, a living history site set in
1771, with its dirt floor, hearth, table, spinning wheel, and sleeping loft,
sent me back both to this country's beginnings and my ownâit was the
perfect manifestation of my childhood dreams.
.... As a historical interpreter at the farm, the foundation of my
transformation into an 18th-century woman was the foundation garment called
"staysâthe fabric and bone device that tied around the upper body.
This was not the wasp-waisted, heaving-bosom look of a Scarlett O'Hara
corset. Instead the torso in stays becomes almost cylindrical, one's front
flattened, one's back held straight. Good posture was a matter of propriety,
and both Colonial boys and girls were put in stays. Males were released
around age 7, but females spent their lives in them. I expected stays to be a
sartorial prison. Instead, I enjoyed them. They made my movements deliberate,
my posture impeccable. I felt as if the past was swaddling me...........
