Did we have this drive to name ourselves, our generation, before the
boomers? I haven't studied or researched this, but I always figured that
the term "baby boom" originally simply described birthrates following WWII,
which eventually declined again in the early 60s.

Like Obama, my birthdate places me within the boomers' ranks. I had just
finished kindergarten during the summer of love.
