Yes, I think fire ants came in through Mobile or Biloxi. We have Africanized bees too.

The border patrol here just asks if you are a U.S. citizen, you reply yes and you are on your way. Not being Hispanic, I have no idea if they ask Latinos to present ID to determine if they are citizens or not. Maybe it's more of an invasion for these folks, I don't know. The last time I went through the drug dog was very interested in my car, sniffing the tire that some local dog always pees on. The agent asked me if I lived on a farm, and I said yes, and he let me through.

I have never felt the fact they wear a gun (knowing that they are frequently shot and sometimes killed here) was to my detriment or harrassment. If I knew the chances of getting killed in my job were high I'd probably want a gun on me too. When I've traveled to Mexico I must carry and show a visa or passport. I have been detained much longer there.

The agent in the video was rattled because someone refused to give that yes or no. While the guy was making a point, in her head she may have been preparing to get shot and have to defend herself.

My botanical friend is only armed with a microscope and he's at a port of entry, not a checkpoint.

Could we really have stopped those (fire ants), with everything we do, Sage. I heard on the news, recently, that 1/3 of 1 % of all shipping containers are presented for any kind of search. I thionk fire ants came in port on a boat.

Africanized bees came to (arizona anyway) from South America. some of lyndas's ancestors might say that my ancestors were a pestilence that arrived by boat . But they could not stop it anyway.

I don't mind your friend stopping me at the border of texas and asking me if I have fruits are vegetables (or fire ants). I 'do' mind if that same friend is wearing a gun, asking my id ,and recording my info.
I like local, non-centralized. I trust texas, over D.C., and tex. is far from perfect. By the way, didn't fire ants come in at biloxi or asomewhere? .....bobf

God knows I wish someone had turned away that shipment of fire ants. :-/

I've been involved in a bit of my own homeland security

this morning, namely cleaning the stove and its netherlands.
