I know what you are saying. I don't believe I'm any safer with a department of Homeland Security, and think most of it is BS. But I can see a need to try to keep invasives and disease from being imported into our landscapes and croplands. (Unfortunately much of what has run amok, like kudzu, was brought here intentionally). Here there is an Indian mustard Rapistrum rugosum "Bastard Cabbage" taking over farmer's fields and outcompeting our wildflowers. I never saw it until about a decade ago and it's proliferating. It's toxic to livestock who are confined to fields of the stuff. I believe it came it with grass seed. I don't think having someone checking for this kind of stuff is altogether bad. But I do believe botanists were checking imports long before 9/11.

Sage, I don't know the specifics of the NAIS stuff, like Lynn does. I think pretty much everything you wrote is correct , plus more. You know a lot about plants, but I know, I don't like all of this homeland s*curity/p*triot act stuff; plants, animals, people , I don't care.

How did you protect plants before 9 11 ? I remember, as a kid, coming out west on vacation , and being stopped and asked if we had fruits or vegetables, but nobody asked for daddy's id, or searched the car. 'just asked , and waved us on. 'simpler times .....bobf

Bob, you are right, I try to stay out of political talk in general as I'm on the list to glean homesteading knowledge.

From a food standpoint, and an egg farmer, I'm very
aware of NAIS and how it's pushing small farmers around. But
my understanding of APHIS is limited, from my friend in plant pathology research, not my field. Maybe I'm naive, and only looking at botanical proctection from the sense of keeping plant disease and insects out of the country. I suppose Homeland Security could involve the feeding of people, but then that should require agronomists.

I see all of this largely driven by corporate greed of the Monsantos who have undoubtedly benefitted from NAIS and eight years of Bush politics. The last I'd heard the
NAIS thing was dead. What happened?
