Wrong end of the telescope, Bob. You look to the land you have/are going to buy and ask what will do well here. Then you go from there. As we get things fenced, we will be adding pigs. We have enough acorns to feed a dozen pigs a year. Add to that kitchen goods and "stuff" from the garden and you've got a yummy bunch of chops on your table. Sheep, particularly the hair breeds, are both grazers and browsers. We have enough flat with grass and enough hill with brush to keep them quite nicely. The chickens free range and since we won't be buying any of the commercial types to raise for the freezer, we won't need to spend much, if anything, on feed come spring. Same goes for the turkeys. Now, our place won't support a cow. We'd have to feed one if we get one but we already have someone who wants to give us a ton or two of hay if we'll raise a pig or two for him. Works for me.

Thanks again, james. If you can grow all of your own kitchen food with a cup of seeds (and good soil, water, and lots of work),

how do you grow the stuff to feed enough animals to feed 2-3 people?

Say, a person had only small animals (rabbits?) up to the size of maybe a couple of sheep , a coupla pigs, and a coupla goats, per year (that should be plenty for two-three people?). With this , and fishing, and perhaps a little hunting, couldn't a couple feed themselves?.

It can't be that easy though (I'm not referring to ease of work). If it were, why are so many people working themselves to the bone physically, and mentally, to make money to provide food and shelter. The amount we (my family) spend on food is ridiculous...bobford
