Well, I have noticed that fish comes from China or Thailand or some other place far away or third world, like Guatemala(and yes, I think it is third world because my Guat friends describe it as such). With no good choice, I usually just buy it labeled as "wild caught" and I am ashamed to admit that I overlook the Product of China or Packaged in Thailand thing. I wish I knew someone who raised tilapia. I wish I lived close to the ocean for shrimp, grouper, lobster, crab and mussels.. I wish I could sweet talk my cousin in Oregon to ship me 100# of fresh salmon...I wish fish farming didn't put heavy metals like mercury into the fish...I wish, I wish, I wish, but I still buy fish. ;)
James, I have a trot line. I need to make a box for the hooks-for storage. I have plans, just haven't done it. My trot line is still in the bag. We used to fish with trot lines when I was a kid on various large lakes across the South. We would catch catfish mostly, with the occasional turtle...Now, with boat traffic everywhere-jet skis and such-I'd almost be afraid to run a line. Some kid would come along and screw up or steal your rig just for fun. Our closest lake is a PFA, no trot lines allowed there.
However, after last weekend's paddle on the nearby river, I discovered a very nice fishing shoal adjacent to a deep run AND faster water. It was only a few hundred yards upstream from the put in point, out of sight around a bed. We could paddle up to the shoal and fish. So, I am pretty hopeful for catfish and stripers next Spring. But because I don't live on the river or have immediate access, I'd be afraid to leave a trot line on the river. DNR doesn't like them, even though they are legal.
Tell me how you fish with the trot line. Do you bottom fish or use jugs or just stealthily lay out the line near shore?

I always buy U.S. raised fish, regardless of price (fresh, U.S. raisedcatfish runs about $5.00 -- $7.00 per lb., 'is cheaper if on sale OR frozen).
That's not bad. I did finally find a locally owned grocery store (local chain, maybe six stores or so) that had frozen catfish raised and processed in the USA for about $2.75 lb. I've gotta get some trot lines going! If it'd ever rain and fill the damn lake.
