In my last job, no.  I did, however, give it my all.  The first 6 or 7
months, while I was learning my job, I did about 4 hours of unpaid 'homework'
every night.  That time allowed me to be a better employee, but no, my
employer did not deserve that, I just did it.  HOWEVER, when I worked for the
PD, when I was a SWORN public servant, as the President of the United States
is as well, I worked for the public at large, and YES, the people did deserve
my attention 24/7.  I think, if you ask most cops, firemen, mayors, etc. that
they will feel the same way.  There is no time in the day when you are not
responsible, and the responsibility is always a heavy load.  You just
can't/don't turn it off.  For a job as important as POTUS, when an entire
nation looks to you for your leadership and guidance on issues, then the
demands are even greater.  It is a conflict of interest, IMO, if the
President is working on his latest book while my kid is literally
sent up a river in some godforsaken place like North Korea.

Well, people are people and not everyone has a decent work ethic.  The best
we can do, I think, is to try to make sure that those we elect have the work
ethic we expect.  I suppose now, we are almost back to James' point about the
willingness to get one's hands dirty.
I do respect writers, Gene.  I enjoy writing, too.  I know it can be mentally
draining and stressful work.  However, everything else aside, like Lynda
said, with an office, advance, stripped of other responsibilites, etc. Barack
still couldn't meet his deadlines.  I have to consider that when I
re-evaluate my vote.  And yes, while I have a plan (to vote Libertarian), I
am constantly re-assessing that plan.

Easy answer?
Grape leaves contain tannins (I am sure you already know this)
Tannins are bitter ( and this, too)
Touch a grape leaf to your tongue...yukky-bitter?  sucks the saliva right
off, doesn't it?  Makes you wanna spit.   I can see you making weird faces
and sticking your tongue out in yukkiness<g>.  The tannic acid reacts with
enzymes in the cuke (it is a pectin generating enzyme that makes pickles
softer mushier) reducing the enzymatic action and in the process, the leaf
also sucks the excess moisture out of the cuke, too, making it even more
crispy and the other seasonings, like the dill and garlic and maybe a red
pepper, offset the bitterness.
I kind of recall that only a certain part of the cuke has this enzyme.. I
can't remember if it is the stem end, the blossom end, the peeling, or
what... disregard that cuz I'm not sure.

You can also can the grape leaves themselves and use them for various recipes.

O.K. all you chemist type folks out there. Anyone know anything about the
chemical properties of grape leaves? What "special" or different
chemical
might be in them that would make a home canned pickle more crisp?

I'm trying to cut down on buying "stuff" and had heard that using
a grape
leaf in your jar when making pickles would give them a better texture since
home canned pickles are inclined to be mushy. So, when I put out my last
batch of zucchini pickles I stuck a grape leaf in each jar and blessed if
the zucchini pickles aren't a rather nice firm texture compared to what one

might expect from zucchini.

So, I'm wondering what the magic is in the grape leaves. AND, it sure is a

whole lot less expensive to simply walk out the door and cut some grape
leaves instead of heading on down to the neighborhood market to buy Pickle
Crisp, which btw, you can't buy anymore or some alum.

Let me check my 'sent' list again, then. This mail server is getting just
about useless with this list, I need to change to a different email format.
For
some posts hitting 'reply' sends it to the list and sometimes it sends it to
the individual poster. Sometimes, Gene, I respond directly to your posts but
sometimes it's someone else quoting your posts and so I have no idea where
some of the responses go. It's annoying.
