Not to demean your very sincere and knowledgeable exhortation, James, but I
find your use of 'rendering' and 'greasy' in the same last sentence(s) very
amusing. Was that intentional? <g>

Once in my misspent youth, as I was pitching about for some cheap and easy
ways to acquire skills and knowledge, I sent in the postcard for a
correspondence course in Electronics. I had already looked into the high
school vo-tech
electronics courses and the local community college offerings and so was
familiar with them.

The greasy salesman showed up at my house one Saturday morning (my parent's
house, I was 16), and went through the offering. It was pretty wimpy, I had
enough electronics behind my belt by then to know so.

So when he wound down his spiel, I said thanks but no thanks. He
ceremoniously picked up his clipboard and pronounced in his most pontifical
voice, "Well
... OK ...I'll have to put you down as being unqualified to take the course."

Having not yet grown a brain and being easily pulled into such traps I said,

"Beg pardon, how could I not be qualified? I know more math than your
course
covers, in fact through Ham Radio and other connections I've built and
modified equipment far more sofisticated than your course deals with .. how
do you
come to the conclusion that I am not qualified to take your pitious course?"

"Hmmm ... well ... it's my conclusion you could not successfully complete
it."

"How on God's green earth could you come to that conclusion ..."

"Eh ... ah.... I'm putting down here that you are unqualified to take this
course because of lack of interest."

When I asked him to describe the population who were prefectly qualified to
take his course but just decided not to ... he had no answer.

I may not have grown a brain up to that point but bull crap like that is
excellent fertilizer for brain-growing. I told Mr. Greasy that if his
outfit had
to resort to cheap, sleazy tricks like that, they obviously had nothing to
offer anyone. ,Picking up my own notebook and feigning making an entry in
it I
said, "I;ll have to put your course down as unqualifed for anything but
lining
the parakeet cage or wrapping fish."

Being tuned to that sort of cheap salesman's trick served me well since
then.
You either do it this way or else the only other conclusion is that there is
something wrong with you. Never that you looked at the facts and found the
proposition wanting, never that the conclusion other than yours might be the
better conclusion ...no indeed! Respond the way I want you to, or else I
will
have to put you down as unqualified.

It is an unmistakable sign that the person has nothing whatever to offer.

Still run into that ploy from time to time. We either elect Obama or else
we have been taken in by a Rovian campaign. What of those of us who abhor
the
socialism that Obama portents, what of us who cringe at the thought of
glorified social worker running the country, what about when we hear the
blank echo
of "Change the chages we are changing to change" and find it empty rhetoric.

Doesn't matter, we are only failing to vote for Obama because we are duped
by
the Rovian campaign.

It's becoming clearer all along that the advocacy for Obama is rendering
down
to such cheap, greasy salseman tactics.
