That is exactly the kind of background info I need...thanks..
If we could only find something for the primaries comparing just the last two or three elections..

But just looking at that, you could probably make a case that folks were tired of Bush Sr.'s shenanigans...Persian Gulf War, No new taxes, yada yada...and of course, Slick Willie was elected. He was 46 at the time, the third youngest president after Teddy and Jack...he was pretty different, too, fairly good looking, the first president to play a sax on SNL, he didn't inhale, etc...
So now we have Bushbaby in office, same shit, different decade, and St. Obama is threatening to kick down the door. He'll be 47 in January, so he's not about to dethrone Wild Bill, but he is young, and different...

Everyone keeps saying that he is new, different, but to me, I still just see history repeating itself, cyclic, like a sine wave. People just have short memories...just yesterday I heard someone say that Teflon was the first black man with had ever run for the presidency, and that that took guts...blah, blah....zzzzz...WRONG. I guess they forgot about Mr. KEEP HOPE ALIVE way back in 1984...
So anyway, we have hope and more hope, and yet, I am as pessimistic as ever that things will change.

I've made my decision as to how I will cast my vote.
I will vote for Bob Barr, not because I like him-I detest the man, but I don't like any of the candidates..as such, I must vote for a party, and I have long thought we need a true multi-party or at least a third party system where the third party is not an afterthought, but a true party with substantial power and influence. The only way that will happen is if people step out of the crowd and follow their own hearts, but I am also pessimistic about that. I live in the Bible belt where 99% of folks claim to be Protestant Christian, yet, most couldn't tell you exactly what they believe. They have just blindly followed the religion of their youth, without examination of it's tenants. It's the same with politics..people come from a Republican family, so they vote Republic, or whatever...
It's sad and ironic that I must vote for someone I don't like, someone that doesn't have a hope in hell of winning, and someone who would totally screw up the country if he did by some miracle win...but it is a matter of principle, and for me that means a choice between Libertarian and Green...I will vote for Bob Barr.

In 1992, was the highest turnout in the last few decades with 68% of those of voting age voting. In 2004, the number was 64% which was up from 60% in 2000. That was an increase of 15 million voters over the 2000 election. During that 4 year period (2000-2004), the voting-age population increased by 11 million.

The 1992 election had the highest registration rate of voting age citizens with 75%. 2000 had a voter registration of 70% and 2004 had a 2% increase to 72%.

The highest rate was for voters over 55 with a 72% actually voting. The 18-24 age bracket only had a 47% voting ratio.

This was also reflected in the number that registered with 79% for the over 55 group and only 58% for the 18-24 group. The 18-24 age group also had the highest rate of non-shows at the voting polls with 11% of those that registered not showing up to vote.

Now, the total stats on this year won't be available until next year. Last report, in the Washington Post has reported that the Dems have registered 1 million new voters and the Reps have only registered about half that number. Everyone keeps say record numbers but no one is giving any numbers.

AND, there is a slight problem with reporting record number of voters. Those folks are being paid to get people to register. That doesn't mean that the folks they register can vote or even that some of them exist! All those voter registration cards have to be vetted.

So, we'll know the real numbers sometime after January 2009.

Been wondering about that...I know a lot of folks are talking, but talk
is cheap. Have you seen any stats regarding turnout at the primaries
this year? I've heard that the Democrats are registering a lot of
voters, but did they show up at the polls?
Is the percentage of voter turnout (compared to the primaries in 2004)
greater than the population growth would increase it and if so, have
they determined why?
Just wondering..
