Lisa,
If you can get close enough to see their eyes, poisonous snakes have vertical slit shaped pupils. Round pupils means it is not poisonous, might have a bad attitude, but not poisonous.

Thank you, guys.

We cleared the brush and mowed to the water line, so that should help. We
have two Border Collies and they often roam in the pond. Guess it must be
copperheads which does not thrill me. The snakes were in the water, but
we'll stomp up a storm. Youngest son was trying to catch the two he saw to
'relocate' them to a nearby creek. We told him to hold off until we knew
more.

Don't feel very good about playing in the pond w/ the snakes around though.
