Well, sure, "technically" bad things are human caused. However, there is no way to stop other humans from causing you (the generic you) to be involved in an accident.

No one was to know that some drunk would think it was cute to bury a broken beer bottle jagged side up at the bottom of a slide so that Son #3 would land on when he went flying down the slide. 17 stitches in the arch of his foot later, we could all sit around and say "what if" but that is just plain silly.

Nor could we have known in advance that as he was walking past a metal pole that a bunch of kids would come running around a corner and he'd get pushed into the pole and chip a tooth.

And again, when he played Pop Warner, there was no way to know that another kid would decide to spear him in the back with his helmet and cause a back injury.

Sometimes "sh*t happens" because there is no way to control others. I suppose we could have wrapped him up in cotton batting and refused to allow him to play sports or to have more energy than 20 other kids put together. We could have refused him the roller blades (road rash), playing baseball (another chipped tooth), playing soccer (hamstring), playing hockey (concussion), climbing trees (cuts and scrapes) and all those other things that boys do but we didn't, so having insurance was a good thing.

So, just curious, what diseases are you going to prevent by "choice" and what do you mean by "choice?"

This being a world where accidents and disease happen despite
our best efforts, . . . .

I wrote about luck and chance a few weeks ago. I feel the same about
accidents. And I think disease can be prevented by choice. Contrary
to the happy "S--t happens," I feel that bad happenings are human caused.

Anyway, old farts have the option of Medicare (though the so-called
prescription drug benefit is a scam).

I decline to accept and pay for Medicare Part B. Drugs? Don't use them.

I am, however, in favor of a national health care plan, for pragmatic
reasons. Should the DC Whorehouse ever create one, I will willingly
pay my fair share of its cost.
