If you really took the time to listen to Kerry (and had the chance to do so--he definitely wasn't cut out for the world of sound-bites), he had a lot of good things to say. I would've been pleased as punch to have him in the White House; he's a smart guy, and knows enough to listen to other, smarter people when they offer good advice. Probably *too* much to be able to win in Our Stupid Times, but enough to have made him a good President if he had.

On the other hand, I still do a double-take when I get emails from him that say stuff like this: "I wish I could just wrap you in my arms and embrace each and every one of you individually all across this nation. I thank you from the bottom of my heart." Who the fuck is he kidding?

I wouldn't characterize myself as "excited" about Kerry, but then I wasn't excited about Clinton, either. I was a Tsongas man. Clinton was a smarmy leering panderer. I love watching him speak, though. Damn good public speaker. But then one of the best political speeches I ever heard was given by Al Sharpton, and I'm damn glad *he's* not President.

True...on the other hand Bush won the popular vote this time. Not
but much but he won by enough that I doubt there would be a recount
(if that was something that mattered) And Nader did a lot less

I feel less like Bush won this election than he didn't lose it. How
many pro-Kerry folks were excited to have Kerry in the White House
versus excited to get Bush out?

The only time I got excited this election was when I heard former
President Clinton last night on 102 Jamz pleading with folks to come
out and vote. I wanted to vote for him again.

I did a little number crunching because if Kerry were to win NM and
IA then everything would have been exactly the same as 2000 except
Kerry would have taken NH instead of Bush. Given that Bush won in
2000 with *271* electoral college votes, had electoral college votes not been redistributed since the 2000 election, Kerry would
have won.

States that went red in both 2000 and 2004 GAINED *7* electoral
college votes since 2000. States that went blue in both lost 7.
NM and IA stayed the same, as did NH.

So the red/blue map actually shows that Kerry did better than Gore
did. The thing is, the states that go blue didn't count for as
much. And it made the difference in this election.
