Actually this is completely untrue. Academics *technically* do not own the copyright to their own work as they are designated as employee's of the University

Depends on your employment contract... Few universities demand that their academic employees transfer copyright in works. A bigger issue is the copyright policy of journals, who very often do demand that copyright in papers published be transfered, and impose tight restrictions on how the academic may then use their own work. The open access journal people are doing good work trying to fix this situation.
