There is a python-based script (was youtube-dl, now renamed to something else) for downloading flv files, which mencoder can convert to avi, playable
I did not get this working even with puppy linux - it needed additional libraries besides python.

by mplayer. I did not try it. You can also download youtube videos as higher quality mp4 at http://keepvid.com and extract the mp3 from the mp4.
Nope, needs java, as do most other such sites. Steven posted the address of a site that does not use java - see archives.

Someone provided a wget script for downloading a flv directly.
I have not tried this. It is complicated to extract the actual address, and then you will need something to convert to a format mplayer can handle. ffmpeg - have not tried to use with bl2.

Puppy linux you2pup no longer works since Youtube changed flash. Instead of an mp4 to be converted, it downloads a short error message.

Anything fast enough (600MHz is awfully jerky) and with enough memory to play flash video online will work with a more recent linux than basiclinux. Recent Flash (10) requires GTK2 but somehow Mac OS 10.4 will work with Flash 9 so there may be a gtk1 workaround. Beyond my abilities.
