This sounds like what is happening on my Winbook (you cannot use the keyboard
or mouse once you start X) so I am interested in such a kernel too. Would
a 2.4 kernel work for you (with 2.4 modules to match)?

If you can get your laptop onto a network (via pcmcia network card and
hub or router) you could use a 2-floppy BL3 to transfer files to the hard
drive. Steven, how would one go into BL3 without X?

Or were you thinking of compiling a kernel on the 486? It took me
20 minutes per kernel on a pentium 200MHz.

DSL linux and BL with standard 2.4.31 kernels both have the problem
on the Winbook. Slax and Puppy linux with 2.6 kernels do not. Have you
tried any very small linuxes with 2.6 kernels and graphics (other than
BL) on your 486 laptop? Are there any? James recommended Tinycore
Linux.
