Sindi,
thank you very much for the hints: I will try.
I booted DOS holding F8 before Win98 loaded (I have a Pentium S (2Gb HD, 32
Mb RAM).

It is strange because Bl3-50 DOS version worked with X booting DOS that way
some days ago.
Then I installed delilinux on a linux partition (Lilo on MBR).
Now to boot DOS I choose "windows" from Lilo and then I hold F8
I do not if this may cause X not to work in Bl3-50 now (sorry if that is a
nonsense).

I have not used lilo with Windows, just dos/linux. F8 keeps windows from booting, but you may also need to hit F5 (I don't know in what order). Do you have a config.sys file with himem.sys in it?

Mouse drivers also interfere with Xvesa. 'Bypassing system files'.
I did Xsetup choosing kind of mouse (serial, 2 buttons, on COM2): it worked
when X worked.

I should have written 'DOS mouse drivers'. The BL mouse drivers do not affect X (Xvesa driver).

Giuseppe

Steven,
thank you very much for your hints and explanations (very useful because
I
am a newbie).
I have Windows 98 and I boot Dos by F8: this way X does not work in
Bl3.50
on my PC.

attr -r -s -h msdos.sys
Change bootgui=1 to bootgui=0
attr +r +s +h msdos.sys

This will boot you directly into DOS rather than Win98, and while booting
hold F5 to prevent the DOS drivers (himem.sys, emm386.exe) from loading.
Mouse drivers also interfere with Xvesa. 'Bypassing system files'.

(This did not work on one Compaq server, which refused to boot dos without
himem.sys.)

Then type win for windows, or boot linux from baslin.

Were you booting linux from a DOS box in Win98?

Sindi

Is it naked DOS?

Anyway I may install Bl3.40.
Regards.

Giuseppe

With the one from DOS, X does not start

Some DOS settings (in config.sys and autoexec.bat)
conflict with Xvesa. Try booting a naked DOS
(without config.sys and autoexec.bat) and see
if X works.

The floppy version is ok with startx. Are the two
versions different?

Yes. The DOS version boots via LOADLIN.EXE and the
floppy version boots via LILO. The LILO boot does
not conflict with Xvesa.

Installing bl3.40 will I be able to use bl3 addons?

Yes. The BL3 add-ons were all designed for version 3.40.

Cheers,
Steven
