There is your problem. Can you up that in your BIOS config?

We have three of these beasts and the only choices are the default 512MB and the improved 1MB. Somehow Windows (and Debian?) get more video RAM from the shared system RAM.

0x010E: 320x200x16 TrueColor [5:6:5:0] (no linear framebuffer)
0x0127: 640x400x16 TrueColor [5:6:5:0] (no linear framebuffer)

There are your decent color modes.
I suggest you put 640x400x16 in /etc/Xconfig


Could the no framebuffer mean this video chip does not have framebuffer capabilities?
