It's still failing with "No Carrier" _immediately_ after
the number is dialed.

I also tried with "chat no" added.

Ron Clarke had a similar problem, I think: eznet doesn't seem to work
right if your ISP uses a particular flavor of PAP/CHAP authentication.
His solution was to use wvdial instead. Since you have used chat
before on Debian, maybe that is the way to proceed? A libc5 versions
of chat should be available in the Slackware 4.0 n5/ppp.tgz package.
You can get it from various Slackware mirrors, for example,
http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackware/slackware-4.0/slakware/n5/ppp.tgz.
Before you install it, back up your pppd binary (in /usr/bin or
/usr/sbin, normally) so you can use it instead of the ancient
Slackware 4.0 binary. You should then be able to copy over your
working Debian setup and connect.

:-) If that doesn't work, ask Ron if he has any suggestions, since he
has some experience with this..
