well.... this wouldnt exactly be a 'normal' crash... this
would be a slow meltdown... a creep-in of memory corruption
(and most likely harddrive corruption)...
the bad part is the harddrive will be the first to go due
to it being the biggest power sucker in a laptop

One way to minimize the corruption would be to run Linux
from a ramdisk and put the HD in sleep mode after booting.
Or, better yet, unplug the HD altogether and boot the
ramdisk from floppies.

We have BL3 running on memory card (in a camera with USB cable) or USB memory stick. These use less power. Would a crash damage them?
