Regarding running qemu without VGA graphics.
Please test this out with WP if possible, booting from CLI not X.

I might install SW10.2 to a partition to test qemu in before messing up the BL libraries irreversably, then attempt to compile a version that does not need SW9.0. Can it be compiled to not use SDL at all? Will it run in -nographic mode if you don't have the SDL library?

Something from the qemu manpage that may be relevant:
-nographic
Normally, QEMU uses SDL to display the VGA output. With this
option, you can totally disable graphical output so that QEMU is
a simple command line application. The emulated serial port is
redirected on the console. Therefore, you can still use QEMU to
debug a Linux kernel with a serial console.
