In DOS, I was able to use ctcm to choose from 6 different
configurations, two of which had no second DMA. Do you think your
error message means that the channel you chose was unavailable, or
the card was not set up to have a second DMA channel? It looks
from pnpdump like it should be dma16=3 but the rules seem to be
that DMA16 is 5, 6, or 7.

I had a 'Creative SB16' for the above. (Sindi)

Perhaps it would work if I changed the second DMA to one of these.

David has a Vibra card that isapnp appears to be setting to high DMA=3.

I ran DOS ctcu and diagnose on my Vibra16X card (Audio and Gameport only - no Stereo Enhancement, AWE or IDE or Reserved) and discovered that High DMA has to be the same as Low DMA (shared DMA). My card works with both of them set to 1. Ctcu does not even offer the choice of 5, 6, 7 (diagnose does, but then they are all unavailable).

There are 6 configurations you can choose among, with or without MPU 300/330 or OPL 388 or a second DMA. What is the purpose of setting high DMA to the same as low DMA rather than not having it at all? I think you (David) said high DMA was for 16-bit sound. I will check if 8-bit and 16-bit output sound any different here. Vibra is supposed to be a cheaper card than SB16 and has a different driver (vibra16.sys) which I might want to specify in config.sys, and apparently omits high DMA. I do not need to specify high DMA (dma16) to avoid conflict on the two computers with vibra16 cards.

I did another test, booting into DOS without system files, insmodding the sb and sound modules, and linux sound works - nothing initialized in DOS or with isapnp. Maybe it would not work if there were some conflict that required changing from the native settings.
