It will take me while to figure out the isapnp and opl3, but I much
prefer the sound of awe32 to FM synthesis so I would rather work on
that and if opl3 is not needed, what else is needed? With -f I get
a 'no playback device found' but without -f (default awe32) I don't
get that message.

According to AWE32, you will need to set up the isapnp.conf file
manually with the AWE32 card, too. I can't help you with this one,
unfortunately, so you're going to have to be lucky enough to
figure out how it's done, or get a new kernel with in-kernel ISA
PnP support. You need to insert the awe_wave module after everything
else, and you need to use the sfxload utitlity (from the AWE32 tools
package) to load the soundbank file. Sounds very complicated to me.

Does this mean I do NOT need to insmod opl, just awe_wave? Do I really need isapnp or do I just need to figure out the correct settings for the insmod awe_wave file, from what worked for other people.

I was able to insmod awe_wave without any settings, and with no error messages, but then it still did not play midi files. I will read up on this some more and get the awe32tools package. Thanks for all the pointers.

I read that you need to configure the Opti cards with isapnp tools but I got one working without isapnp so I am hoping I can avoid it.

I will look at the awe32tools package. You are right, this is complicated.

In DOS I have several midi players, at least two of which utilize the AWE feature, so that is another option. I set up lynx.cfg to play midis.

I just acquired a PCI soundblaster Live card. If this is awe32, would it be easier to set up? PCI cards don't seem to require specifying io etc.
