You _need_ opl3 for FM synthesis, with or without an awe32 card.
There are three other MIDI options for the AWE32 (two if you
have a Vibra16): AWE32 synthesizer (non-FM, slightly better sound
than FM, more complicated setup, needs different things), MPU-401
output to a MIDI keyboard, use of Timidity or other software
MIDI synthesis.

I should mention that the procedure detailed below is for the
Vibra16. It is probably different for an AWE32.
