Are they Windows CE machines? If yes, answer to yr question
is: "it depends what their brandnames are."

It's possible to put linux on some Compaq iPAQs
and some others.

http://www.linux-laptop.net/palmtops.html
tells me:
* 3com PalmPilot
* 3com PalmPilot
* Apple Newton
* Casio Cassiopeia
* Compaq iPaq
* Digital Research Itsy Pocket Computing Project
* Everex Freestyle
* Intel SA1100
* HP Jornada 820
* Philips Nino
* Psion Series 3
* Psion Series 5
* Psion Series 5MX
* Psion Series 7
* Psion Netbook

For sure linux on Compaq iPAQ / Psion is the most advanced.
I mean you get ready-to-use distro.
