The modeline for 1024x768 at 85 vertical Hz has a horizontal frequency which
was beyond the capability of my monitor. I had to make my own modeline.
This is something that you definitely do not want to do. The XFree86-Video
Timings HOWTO covers all of the gory details.

Yes. I'm not sure what determines the limit, but it is larger than 2000.
I found the relevant details. It was posted by Steven to this list,
back on 14 Apr 2003. Here's what he said:

So this goes right below the modes selection line in XF86Config.

You should try this and see if it works for you.

And full-size X provides the solution.
