If I connect two computers via serial cable and run one as a dumb terminal (it involves editing an agetty line in a file in /etc and typing a longish line involving pppd and the IP numbers which is described in netsetup) is there any similar risk involved to running in.telnetd? I have to remember to undo the changes to agetty or I can't use the serial port for mouse or camera or modem. I don't think anyone on the web can sneak into my serial port when I am not looking.
The procedure (I deciphered my notes):
On the server edit /etc/inittab by removing the # in front of the line about /dev/ttyS0 (and change to match the com port you are using and probably to set the speed to 115200 if it is not that).
Plus a nullmodem cable into this comport on the server and a comport on the client.
Then on the server use a terminal program to set the line and speed and the fact you are not using a modem, and to connect. It can be done with microcom (BL3). I use kermit: Type Enter after each line.
set line /dev/ttyS0 (not the same as for modeming probably)
set speed 115200 (less if you have a 386 laptop - 19200?)
set carrier-watch off (local use)
C (connect)
Log in as user. You can also log in as root if ttyS0 is in /etc/securetty. I don't know if I added it when I added ttyp0 (which lets me log is as root over a telnet connection, apparently a bad idea).
tty1 is vt1.
Any DOS terminal program should also work. Simtel is full of them. Steven recommended commo or telix and explained how to do file transfer.
I tried DOS kermit.
I never did get kermit file transfer to work and I don't recall if Steven's send/receive scripts work over this sort of connection.
I should be able to go online with two computers on one modem connection this way - is it safer than in.telnetd?
The Serial Networking business in BL3 netsetup is not dumb terminal, it is similar to ethernet or plip networking and I think would be used with in.telnetd or send/receive so would be a security risk.
