With the above encouragement I did some experimenting and the following
works:
boot with bare.i kernel from SW71
load sound modules for ess solo chip (soundcore, soundlow, sound,
esssolo1) using script

Xvesa -screen 640x480x16 &rxvt -e links2 -g
(I could not manage to specify mode for links2 so got the default 640,
therefore Xvesa should match or it goes offscreen)
ESC Setup
Associations: Label - realaudio
Content-type audio/x-pn-realaudio
Program /usr/local/RealPlayer8/realplay
Uncheck Block terminal, Run in terminal and Ask before opening
Close

File extensions: Extension(s) ram,rm,ra,rmm
(do NOT use rpm which is found in Opera unless you want to play rpm
binaries)
Content-type audio/x-pn-realaudio
Close
Save options (important!!!)

Test this on a local file in the Realplayer directory (firstrun.rm)
which does not mean it worked since this is not an audio/x-pn-realaudio
and if you put application instead of audio/x-pn in both places it still
works. I had to fix this when an online file brought upan error message
about nothing being assigned to content-type audio/x-pn-realaudio

Do a google search on internet classical realaudio and click on a link, it
brings up the Realaudio window and buffers and plays.

Hitting Ctrl-X stops the playing and after this (maybe even if you don't
exit that way) none of the keyboard navigation works any more in links,
but the mouse works so I am stuck with that.

You can change to a text console and run other programs while listening to
the radio. RP has a volume adjustment but so does my boombox set to line
in and pluggd in with a stereo-to-sound-card and two monos to boombox
which I think comes with some sound cards (or Radio Shack).

If you go into X or Xvesa with icewm, startx, and more than 640
resolution, typing links2 -g gets you the same resolutoin.

Anyway, Xvesa works fine for Realaudio (except I cannot get it to install
on a computer where I did not install the full set of X packages,
which might just be some file is missing somehow, and there is a bug of
some sort telling me the wrong error).

I might try this next with lynx in Xvesa rxvt.
