I would use the lilo.tgz from Slackware 7.1 for this.

Would it also mess up whatever I had on the computer before that?
We did this once to remove an antivirus program from MBR. I don't have
any boot managers installed. Isn't MBR used to keep track of what files
are on there already?

I will experiment on our 200MB test linux drive, which we can redo and
start over.

Today a programming friend who likes to think about our little hardware
problems (and solved a printer problem by suggesting a shorter cable which
delivered higher voltage when one printer would not work on the second
printer port of one computer otherwise) said that DR-DOS and MS-DOS 6.22
put a different FAT12 file structure on the floppy disk than do Win9x
DOS'es and this might explain why we can boot linux from a floppy disk
formatted with Win9x but sometimes not with DR-DOS. I am thinking of
using these intermittent computers and keeping zimage on a Win9x floppy
disk for when it won't boot from hard drive.

There was something about linux getting confused by hitting the wrong
numbers and refusing to boot for security reasons.
