I am running out of reasons to use X in BL2. I don't need X to get more
text on a page, so long as I am happy with a choice of 40, 80, 100 and 132
columns of text mode screen font (and many choices of number of lines).
The console mode program 'screen' can be used to copy things between 10 or
more programs running in the same console, and two switch between them.
Text-mode browsers lynx and links can use zgv for viewing (or seejpeg but
some cards don't work with it) so xli is not needed.
The other things I was using X for are:
Opera
(which can't be run in BL2, but can in BL3 with newer libraries)
but links2 graphical works without X. Links is not too good at javascript
yet. Links2 only works at 640x480x16 colors (or CGA and 256 colors) on a
fancy 8M graphics chip in our Compaq (which does 1600 res in X, I think).
SVGAlib does not seem to be keeping up with new video hardware.
XPDF - gs is much faster. The DOS version of gs can be used with
psview to zoom and scroll. The linux equivalent of psview requires X.
Has anyone tried ghostview or gv with BL2? I will look for a precompiled
version of gv - what is the Debian equivalent of SW7.1? I think you also
need the small X ghostscript package with it, in additional to regular
ghostscript.
Kermit
I was told that in order to have a scroll buffer for kermit you needed to
run it in an xterm. I did that, with a scrollber (-sb in the xterm
definition). You can scroll with a mouse or with Shift-PgUp and
Shift-PgDn. I just read that you can also do this without X and I tried
it and learned that it only works on the SECOND set of PgUp andPgDn keys
(not the ones on the number pad), which is why it was not working for me
on my usual XT keyboard.
Is there some easy way to modify this XT keyboard for use in console mode
so that I can Shift-PgUp and use the scroll buffer?
