I was previously using the color SVGA server with a depth of 8, which works fine, but is very grainy. It looks to me that the monitor settings in your /etc/XF86Config are not quite right for your monitor. They are almost right (otherwise you wouldn't get as good a display as you have), but they are a wee bit off. Other than the "lines" at
the bottom of the screen, everything looks wonderful. I was getting an
error stating that 1024kb of video memory wasn't enough, and that the
graphics
engine was shut down. So, I lied to it and told it I had 2048kb
instead.
It didn't solve the problem, but it didn't shut down the graphics
engine this
time. And, as XWindows started, 4 large rectangles had replaced the
lines
at the bottom of the screen. These rectangles seem to be smaller
mirror
images of the desktop. And then as the desktop loaded, all of the
icons
looked great, but the were "reflected" at the bottom of the screen,
and the toolbar at the bottom of the screen was "reflected" at the
top of the doubling everything and looking all jumbled together. Even
with
the problems, the color settings are the best I've had thus far... Where did you get the HorizSync and Vert Refresh numbers from? I got them from scouring the web for any and all
information
regarding the installation of XWindows on a ThinkPad 365X. Everything
I've seen has roughly set the HorizSync at 30-70 and the VertRefresh at
50-90. I've tried tweaking them in both directions to no avail. Also, since this has happened, I've noticed my screen shutting down after five minutes of not being used despite being set to shut down after 15 minutes of not being used in /etc/rc.d/rc.M.I believe the 15 minutes you set only applies to the CLI, not X. I think you use xset (in ~/.xinitrc) to set the screensaver time in X. It's happening when I'm completely out of X and using the console. It sounds like my hard drive has been powering down as well. I haven't used X enough lately to notice if it is effecting it as well. When I run Windows 98, it doesn't happen at all.
