Try downloading and installing xvesa.tgz from JP's site (see where to get
add-ons at the BL2 website. Then type:

xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvesa -screen 800x600x16


DOes this give you 16-bit color with a good-looking screen and icewm?
