Yes, if it still exists (with all its support libraries
intact).
-----------------------------
rm libc.so.6
ln -s libc-2.2.5.so libc.so.6
-----------------------------
Problem is: there are several other libraries (with those
same numbers) that might also have to be relinked if that's
going to work.

Normal.

Normal.

init starts the entire system. It needs a good link to libc6
to function.

That's the library loader complaining. If you've been deleting
libraries willy-nilly, there may not be a usable set of libraries
remaining. It may be necessary to reinstall a library package
from Slackware. It might be best to return to basics and install
the one from Slackware 7.1 (unless you've got the Slack81 package
at hand). You'll find glibcso.tgz in /slakware/a6

Since pkgtool is down, you'll have to install from ramdisk.
cd to the top directory of the sick partition (/mnt or wherever
you mounted it) and execute the following:
-----------------------------------
tar -zxvf /full/path/to/glibcso.tgz
-----------------------------------

Then do the same ldconfig command as above.

Cheers,
Steven
