It starts the bootup, but stops dead at init: see below.
Then it takes a cold boot to restart the computer.

I am heartened by that.

Well, finally one did. :(

I was able to work with about half a dozen or so before this, but I
will be a bit more circumspect from now on.

This one was actually corrupt, I think. Even just extracting it gave
some very odd subdirectories, which formed part of the error message if
read in sequence, with the /bin , /lib , /usr directories found in on
of them.

That sort of thing. :(

I tried replacing one or two of the new libraries with ones that worked
before, but I was already having segmentation faults with the static
Links 2.1.9 graphic, and pkgtool, installpkg too.

This:
---------------------

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly
Freeing unused kernal memory: 60 k freed
init: error while reading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6 :
file too short # all on one line
_

(locked up solid)

Did that, and noticed in /mnt/lib that "libc.so.6 -> libc-2.3.2.so"

Can that link be re-written to point to libc-2.2 , which was working
just fine ? Or is it not as simple as that ?

Different error message:
---------------------

Freeing unused kernal memory: 60 K freed
init: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: version 'GLIBC-2.1.1' not found (required
by /lib/libc.so.6) # on one line

_

(locked up solid again)
---------------------

Any clues ? I appreciate your help.
