Hi,
all on sons-2.tgz are mpg123 , camp ( ansi front end to mpg123 playee )
aumix, aumix miniaml you should have sound. this package is not realy
discribe but it is simple to use, just play around binary in the package camp
is realy a nice console mp3 player. there is also Gphone who need some
aditional gtk library and X but it's a nice "telephone" voice over IP

as Steven said you have to load the correct module for you'r sound card and
make a try with some wav file.

cat toto.wav >/dev/dsp should product sound ! but you need a fast CPU and ram
to play mp3 ... it doesn't work on 486 dx33 with 8mb ram .
you need more power and ram for mp3's
