You can look at the Aspen Saturday market as an example.  Reselling is allowed but must be sourced from in state when products are not available at the market. Everything sold must be Colorado grown even if it is resold.  Google it and it should bring you to the cities website.  In California you can resell but must have a certified producer’s certificate or selling something that is grown by someone else who has a certified producers certificate.  Paperwork yes, resellers at farmers markets no.  That is a state law, something that as the bourgeoning farmers markets market grow all states should adopt so that these markets are protected for those they are supposed to serve, local farmers.  Otherwise people have to protect the markets for the farmers market by market, which takes time, energy, and agreement.

I am sorry about your produce dumping, lying vendors, you can make advertising that points out that you know where you food comes from and others may not!  If you can not find the Aspen rules and regs let me know and I will dig up the link.  Wish I had your Cherokee purples!

I couldn't agree more. These outfits do grow produce too, but you can never tell what they grew and what is bought and resold.  The market is requiring them to say where everything is coming from.  Sometimes they tell the truth, sometimes not.  They have no concept of value. Most everything is sold at wholesale prices.  I quit selling cucumbers there.  When they sell them for 5 to 6 for a $1, it is hard to sell mine at 75 cents each.  Zucchini and bell peppers are similar.

Does anyone know of a market that restricts reselling during certain dates? I have been thinking about proposing a rule change this fall.  For example, when local tomatoes are available, reselling tomatoes should not be allowed.  I am thinking like no reselling from July 1 though October 1. Most of the main crops would have a date.  I know that outlawing reselling won't fly.  So this would be a starting place.

This is why resellers should be outlawed from selling at farmers markets.  It is a law in some states.  Everyone should try and get on the board of their local markets and change the rules so that resellers are outlawed from selling at the markets, market that fact and create a following of people who value local produce.  Resellers are not farmers and therefore should not be able to sell at farmers markets.  It should be outlawed in every state.

You probably know this, but I'd spend late Summer and Winter strategizing on different markets to sell at. Its always going to be difficult to sell in a market with low-balling resellers, especially if it's Cal product (at least most of our resellers have the dignity to stick to a product closer to our region...).

Today was the first day I had big tomatoes for sale at market. I have about 30 pounds of Cherokee Purples and 10 pounds of Big Beef and some yellow ones.  I put $3.00 a pound on them and I brought home about 18 pounds of tomatoes. Lots of dissatisfied customers.   So, I guess I will drop to $2.50 a pound next week and see what happens.  Next week I will have over a hundred pounds to sell for sure.  As far as I know I am the only person with homegrown tomatoes at my market. Lots of ones that are bought and resold out of California and else where.

As far as Cherry Tomatoes, I stuck with $2.50 a pint. I had 75 pint baskets and I brought home 29.  I am the only person with them at my market. I think I will offer a 3 baskets for $6 next week and see what happens.
Money is tight around here, but I have expenses that I have to cover, also.
